East Sussex Associated for the Blind

ESAB currently has over 300 wonderful volunteers helping us to deliver our services. With only 11 paid staff, most of whom work part time, serving over 1,700 clients volunteers play a crucial role in our organisation. It is true to say we couldn’t function without them and we are truly grateful for the time and support they offer us. Many of our volunteers are themselves blind or partially sighted.

If you have a few hours to spare why not join our team? We offer training and expenses and the opportunity for you to meet new people and learn new skills. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities so contact us for more details.

Volunteer drivers

Lack of transport is a real problem for people who are visually impaired, particularly in a rural area like East Sussex. Our volunteer drivers play a vital role in ensuring clients can attend training courses and social groups. If you like driving, this could be the opportunity for you.

Social Groups

ESAB supports 14 social groups across the county and these are all managed and run by volunteers. The volunteers organise the monthly meeting, arrange transport and entertainment and also organise outings. If you are looking for a sociable volunteering opportunity, this could be for you.

Home Visiting

In Brighton and Hove we have an enthusiastic and lively team of 40 people who visit our clients in their homes. The team is made up of people of all ages, ranging from university students to people who are retired. Home visitors can help clients with small tasks such as reading mail or shopping, pop in for tea and a chat or take clients out and about. We have clients who haven’t left their home for years, so having a home visitor who is happy to accompany them out on a walk along the seafront really is a life-enhancing experience. At the moment this opportunity is only available in the Brighton and Hove area.
