AIDS AND EQUIPMENT

ESAB has a well-equipped resource centre at our headquarters in Herstmonceux with a wide range of equipment which can help you maintain your independence.   Items on display include reading lamps, CCTV magnifiers of different sizes and capabilities, hand magnifiers, talking clocks and watches and smaller items such as audible liquid level indicators.

Equipment which works for one person won’t necessarily work for another, so do come and visit us for a demonstration, advice and to trial equipment.   We offer a ‘try before you buy’ scheme on more expensive items of equipment, such as talking microwaves. With this scheme you can borrow the item for a few weeks to try out at home.

We are also setting up a Product Review Panel whereby clients can write reviews and comment on equipment they find useful, or have had problems with.  Product reviews will appear on our website in the future.

We hold a range of smaller items which can be bought from our resource centre, including popular items like ‘bump-ons’, liquid level indicators and thick tipped pens.  We can provide you with details of how to order larger items direct from the suppliers.

Computers can be very useful, for example enabling people to shop from home.  They usually have standard accessibility features which allow you to enhance text size and change contrast colours.  There is also specialist software available, including talking software.  Again, ESAB can offer advice and we run regular introduction to computer days.

Some equipment is expensive and we can advise you on possibly sources of grants towards the cost.

If you cannot get to Herstmonceux to visit us we may be able to arrange transport for you to get here or arrange for someone to visit you at home to demonstrate equipment.

If we don’t have the equipment you want, then the Royal National Institute of the Blind offer a wide range of equipment which can be viewed in their catalogue or at their resource centre in London.
