What we do
ESAB offers information, training and support services to clients, campaigns on issues relevant to clients and delivers awareness raising sessions for businesses and community groups. The services we offer are described briefly below. If you would like more information about these, or to arrange an initial home visit, please contact us.

Client Services

ESAB’s service starts with an initial home visit at which a client’s specific needs are assessed and a plan of action developed. The plan might include:

  • Mobility training to enable people to manage around their home and get out and about.
  • Demonstrations and advice on specialist equipment to assist with daily living tasks. ESAB has an Independent Living Centre fully equipped with both low and high tech equipment.
  • Training to use computers and specialist software which can greatly facilitate access to information, news, shopping and keeping in touch with family.
  • A four-day course on Strategies for Daily Living to impart basic skills and knowledge for managing with sight loss.
  • Training in cookery and kitchen skills to enable fresh food to be prepared and cooked safely.
  • Access to social groups and social activities
  • Access to audio equipment and audio-visual library to maintain access to news, books and films.
  • Providing appropriate information and referring to other agencies for additional support or services.
  • Access to counselling and / or peer support to promote well-being and confidence.
  • For clients in Brighton and Hove, ESAB has funding to provide a home visiting service.
  • ESAB can also provide Deaf-Blind Communicators for clients, for example to attend hospital appointments or important meetings.

Vision Awareness Training

In addition ESAB offers a one-day Vision Awareness Training course to highlight the needs of, and issues facing, people who are blind or partially sighted. This course is particularly useful for carers, community groups, residential homes and businesses. The course can be delivered in ESAB’s training suite or at a location of your choice. Please contact us for details.

Campaigning and Awareness Raising

ESAB staff and User Reference Group are actively involved in campaigning on issues affecting our clients both at local and national levels. We are involved in local consultations on health and transport issues and nationally we were involved in the successful campaign to increase the mobility component of disability living allowance.
